FUKUSHIMA RADIATION: Fact or  Fiction?

We are all aware of the massive earthquake that struck Japan on March 11th, 2011. This disaster has forever changed the country of Japan, and it is possible that it may have changed the entire world as well. The damage at the Fukushima nuclear plant and the resulting spewing of radiation into the earth’s environment are now being monitored by every country in the world capable of doing so.

As a consulting physician for HealthPro Venezuela, and past Director of Public Health in the country of Venezuela, I feel it is my responsibility to write this article due to the constantly changing information that is being provided by governments and scientific agencies around the world concerning the escaping radiation at the Fukushima nuclear plant. With governments saying everything is OK and not to worry, and the scientific community saying it is definitely not OK, and everyone should be very worried, the normal person has little chance of deciphering what is really happening.

Following are some compiled facts about the Fukushima nuclear accident and resulting levels of radiation being reported. I would encourage you to read this information so that you have a better chance to decide on your own if, or how, you need to protect yourself and your family.

Comparing radiation levels at Fukushima with safety standards, and even Chernobyl, is very sobering:

To accurately compare the below information on Chernobyl, to the amount of radiation being released at Fukushima, please consider that the Chernobyl accident was on one reactor and it burned for 8 to 10 days. At Fukushima there are 6 reactors that have now failed. Along with the 6 failed reactors the Fukushima Daiichi plant is storing over 600,000 spent fuel rods. These rods represent 40 years of exchanged, highly radioactive rods, which are being stored on site, with 70% of these old rods now being exposed. The Fukushima disaster has been uncontained for 22 days at this writing, and is continuing.

• US limit for volunteers averting major nuclear escalation: 500 millisievert (total)

• Current average limit for nuclear workers: 20 millisievert per year

• Typical dose near Chernobyl reactor 4 and its fragments, shortly after explosion: ≈ 10–300 millisievert per hour. To explain, the radiation release at Chernobyl was the equivalent to ten Hiroshima’s atom bombs. Chernobyl radiation is responsible for the deaths of more than 16,000 people, with an estimated 1.4 million cancers in the 50 years following the accident.1

• Reported radiation beside reactor 3 at Fukushima I: 400 millisievert per hour. This is what we know about 2 of the 6 reactors that have failed.

• Highest reported level during Fukushima accident: more than 1000 milli sievert per hour reported as the level at a pool of water in the turbine room of reactor two. Exposure to such an environment for four hours would raise the risk of dying in 30 days. 2

• The Japanese Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare raised the maximum allowable exposure for nuclear workers to 250 millisievert from 100 millisievert. It described the move as “unavoidable due to circumstances”.

• On April 29th, Toshiso Kosako, a Tokyo University professor and senior nuclear adviser reporting directly to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, resigned. He was appointed on March 16, five days after the disaster due to his expertise on radiation safety. In a tearful press conference, he said the government and its commissions had taken “flexible approaches” to existing laws and regulation, and have ignored his advice. He said Tokyo officials had drafted measures to deal with the accident that were not in accordance with the law.3

Now that you have an understanding of the severity of the accident and how the Japanese government is handling it, following are some of the results of the radiation release.

Radioactive iodine-131 was found in a March 25 milk sample from Spokane, WA as well as a March 28 milk sample in California. These are the first signs that Japan’s nuclear accident is affecting U.S. food.

Although officials said the amounts detected are “far below levels of public health concern,” advocacy groups such as Public Citizen have disagreed.

“There continues to be a significant risk of increased radiation releases that could result in detrimental health and safety impacts to American populations,” Tyson Slocum, research director of the energy program at Public Citizen, said in an interview, “The emphasis appears to be on downplaying the risks.” 4

The Virginia Department of Health has issued a warning to state residents not to drink rainwater.5

According to Energy News, radioactive Iodine-131 in a rainwater sample near San Francisco was 18,100% above federal drinking water standards.6

Further more, the EPA has advised that iodine-131 levels in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts exceeded the maximum contaminant level (MCL) permitted in drinking water. Radioactive Iodine-131 in a Pennsylvania rainwater sample was 3300% above the federal drinking water standard.7

As a result of these recent findings, The EPA and FDA said in a statement that they have increased monitoring of radiation in milk, rain and drinking water.

So what does all of this mean, what are the possible effects of this radiation and what can we do to protect ourselves?

Radiation exposure damages DNA, motor nerve cells, and other internal structures of our cells, which can lead to cancer and other diseases. Radiation can occur naturally, such as cosmic radiation or uranium and radon in the earth’s crust or it can be man-made from sources such as nuclear power plants, (Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant), X-rays, (TSA’s new full body scan), and other medical equipment.

Cells of the immune system and red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. These are bone marrow stem cells. Cell division and proliferation goes on rapidly in the bone marrow and because there is a tremendous amount of cell division going on in the bone marrow – more than almost any other place in the body – the bone marrow is particularly sensitive to radiation. When the DNA of the cells is damaged by the radiation the cells loose their ability to replenish themselves. This is why people receiving radiation treatment tend to loose their hair, and this is why your immune system is rapidly depleted by exposure to radiation.

Damaged motor nerves do not accurately tell muscles to contract and move.  This is sometimes referred to as muscle/nerve damage.  In these situations, the motor nerve is damaged, which can lead to the muscles being weak, or non-responsive. It can make the person off balance. Situations like this can start even a year after exposure is stopped. Inability to walk is often reported.

The nerve damage from radiation can cause facial drooping, loss of hearing, erectile dysfunction, infertility, and pain as well as mobility issues. It can also cause  ‘drop foot’…a leg becomes weaker so that it can only be picked up off the floor an inch or so.

Radiation nerve damage can happen anywhere in the body and the nerves that are damaged will define the types of problems.

Medications given for this problem only attempt to cover up the symptoms. Sometimes the medications actually make the problem worse due to side effects of these drugs. This can cause more problems instead of correcting the initial problem.

The only way to correctly manage radiation damage is to address the real cause, not the symptoms. The body will heal if it is given the correct tools to do so.  The correct tools are specific nutrients.

(Note: Throughout this article it may appear that I am endorsing the use of the LifeOne formula and the Supreme B formula, that’s because I am. I have used these products extensively and have great confidence in them. However I am not saying that you should buy and use them. The purpose of this article is to inform you in straight talk of the challenges we now face with the Fukushima radiation release. I recommend all of the following precautions and encourage you to take the information I am providing and continue with your own research to find what is right for you and your family. I am of the belief that this radiation release will be with us for a long time and I feel now is the time to act. Radiation exposure is cumulative and all forms interfere with cellular activity and suppress immune system function. The sooner we start protecting ourselves the better we will fair.)

How do we fight back?

The obvious place to begin is to try and remove the radiation from our systems.

Chelation Therapy: How to rid yourself of the radiation?

What is chelation therapy? Chelation therapy is the removal of harmful substances from the body by having a chelating agent bind with the toxic substance and thus allowing the body to remove that complex using its natural mechanisms of waste product removal.

According to John Cranton of the Mount Rainer Clinic, some of the ingredients included in chelation therapies are sodium bicarbonate, vitamin C, magnesium sulfate, folic acid, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), cyanocobalamin (synthetic vitamin B12) or hydroxycobalamin (a form of vitamin B12). 8

I would like to mention here that there is an increasing use of eatable clay being used for chelation therapy, I would advise caution here. Sustained use of eatable clay will deplete the body of many of the necessary minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium, etc., which are extremely important to the body. As an example, magnesium is vital for sustaining the normal heartbeat and is used by physicians to treat irregular heart rhythm.

Iodine

The radiation leaking from the Fukushima plants contains radioactive iodine-131, which can cause thyroid cancer.

Potassium iodide (or KI, as it’s known chemically) is a common form of salt and is known to protect the thyroid gland from radiation and cancer caused by radioactive iodine. One such product commercially available is Iodoral.

The chemical works quickly by saturating the thyroid with non-radioactive iodine. That makes it difficult or impossible for radioactive iodine to be absorbed by the thyroid. If the gland has enough iodine in it, the thyroid doesn’t absorb any radioactive iodine and it is flushed out of the system in urine.

“The thyroid needs iodine to produce the thyroid hormone,” explained Alvin Powers, an endocrinologist and professor of molecular physiology and biophysics at Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee.

“If there is radioactive iodide in anything we eat or drink it gets concentrated in the thyroid, stays there and emits radiation in the thyroid,” Powers said.

When taken before exposure, potassium iodide can provide protection for 24 hours. It also is beneficial if taken three or four hours after exposure, medical experts advise.

Children are considered the most vulnerable to this form of radiation exposure, which is usually absorbed by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated milk or water. After the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident, thyroid cancer rates in children in Belarus and the Ukraine increased substantially.

“If radioactive iodide is in the thyroid it increases the chances of cancer of the thyroid in future years,” said Powers. “How much the risk is increased is controversial, but it increases the risk of thyroid cancer over all, particularly in young people and children.”

Potassium iodine, however, does not protect against other forms of radiation sickness. “All it protects against is the thyroid,” Powers said. “It’s important people don’t think it protects against all the other things that can happen from radiation exposure.”9

“Potassium iodide can provide important protection for one organ from radiation due to one radionuclide,” says the Health Physics Society website.

“It can only provide protection for the thyroid gland from an intake of radioiodine. It doesn’t have any value in protecting other organs of the body or in providing protection from radiation from other radioactive nuclides,” the site warns.10

To reverse the effects of, or to prevent nerve damage due to radiation

It has been known for some time that increased levels of Thiamine (vitamin B1) in the blood stream are very effective in reducing and reversing neuropathy (damaged nerve cells). It is needed by the body to heal the nerve damage.

Neuropathy has also been found to be made worse by deficiencies of vitamin B12 in the body. Vitamin B12 supports the sheathing that protects nerve cells and has shown in studies that it promotes the regeneration and growth of nerve cells.

Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and is essential for making DNA, the genetic material in all cells.

B12 and folate (folic acid) are B complex vitamins that are necessary for normal red blood cell formation, tissue and cellular repair, and the synthesis of DNA. A B12 and/or folate deficiency reflects a chronic shortage of one or both of these vitamins, and a supplement should be taken.

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Radiation exposure can kill the cells that line the gastro intestinal tract, which in turn can cause radiation-induced diarrhea and vomiting. Lactobacillus acidophilus is recommended to re-establish the healthy flora used in normal digestion that will help to reduce the diarrhea and vomiting. This is a common side effect of people undergoing radiation therapy.

Radiation and the Immune System

For purposes of practical radiation protection in humans, most experts agree (including FEMA Emergency Management Institute) that Roentgen, Rad and Rem can all be considered equivalent.

1 rad (Radiation Absorbed Dose) equals 10 millisievert – Remember that radiation exposure is cumulative and in high exposure areas it is often measured by the hour (400 millisievert per hour [mSv/h] equals 40 rads per hour). 11

The immune system is made up of networks of organs, cells and tissues that are biologically programmed to destroy foreign organisms that may harm you. A compromised immune system cannot work efficiently to protect the body, leaving you open to illness or disease.

Low-Dose Radiation – Low-dose exposure to radiation may cause a number of cellular structure mutations, as well as irregularities in the placement and development of chromosomes in the body. Low-dose radiation exposure is defined as full body exposure to below a 50-rad rating exposure. Low-dose radiation has also been shown to affect the development, growth and function of lymphocytes in both children and adults. Lymphocytes are white blood cells that protect the body against a number of different types of infection. Be aware of the risk of leukemia as a side effect of low-dose radiation exposure. Lymphocytes are a front line defense mechanism of the body’s immune system.

High-Dose Radiation – High-dose radiation is considered to be exposure of the entire body to radiation of above 50 rad. Effects of high-dose radiation occur faster than those caused by low-dose exposure. White blood cells may be destroyed within 48 hours. For several weeks after exposure, more white cells die, leaving the body vulnerable to infection. Other side effects may include fever and bleeding.

Extremely High Doses of Radiation – A person exposed to over 1,500 rad risk extreme danger of death, while individuals exposed to between 500 and 1,500 rad may experience severe organ damage. The risk of fatality is high for those who receive such high doses of radiation, even following a bone marrow transplant.12

The majority of all diseases can be connected to an immune system disorder at some level. And, it will continue in its disordered state indefinitely unless you do something about it. A problem here is that the damage to your immune system takes place silently, you don’t know it’s happening, you just become increasingly susceptible to disease. As you contract diseases, you go to the doctor and get medicine that treats the symptoms that disease, but not your deteriorating immune system, your recovery is temporary and often times incomplete.

You won’t get better if your immune system doesn’t get better.

There are many products available to bolster your immune system and I would assume that almost any of them would be better than not doing anything, but some are better than others. I have been prescribing the LifeOne formula for 8 years and it is the best immune system enhancer that I have seen, nothing else comes close in my opinion. You can do your own research on this, but do something, protect your immune system because it is what protects you.

Of Interest

For a detailed explanation of what happened at the Fukushima nuclear plant, in easy to understand language, go to the following report by Physicist, Dr. Aharon Friedman PhD, at http://data.4noguilt.com/fukushimaV2.html. There is nothing medical here; it is an explanation of the events leading up to a “melt down” and what followed.

While I do not endorse the statements of Dr. Friedman, I do consider it worth reading as this disaster has happened, and radiation is being released into the environment. Dr. Friedman says that a cover up is taking place so the government of Japan can “save face”. I am not aware of any cover up in Japan, but if one were occurring, I would personally assume that it is being done to prevent widespread panic due to the massive amounts of radiation contamination.

In Conclusion:

You don’t have to believe that there is a cover up taking place. You don’t have to believe that the escaping radiation is extremely dangerous. However, you do have to accept that the disaster happened, and as a result, large amounts of radiation are pouring into the environment. With that you have to accept that the levels of measureable radiation have increased everywhere in the world in just 20 days. And finally, you have to accept that any increase in the levels of measureable radiation, even small amounts, are not good for you.

As a pre-caution that the worst-case scenario is true, and as a practicing physician, I wrote this article to encourage all readers to protect themselves and their families from the possible effects of this nuclear disaster, which I personally believe is the worst in history, and will eventually affect the lives of millions of people.

I recommend that you consider using the Supreme B formula in conjunction with the LifeOne formula as a first line defense against the effects of radiation and for immune system enhancement. Complete information on both of these natural products can be found at this website http://www.lifeone.org.ve/. The future will reveal the truth, but the time to protect yourself is now.
